A Challenging Time for Our Bees

With the arrival of Varroa destructor, Australia faces a significant challenge in protecting our beloved bees. This harmful mite, originally from Asia, attaches itself to honey bees, feeding on their bodily fluids and weakening their immune systems. Varroa infestations can lead to various diseases and significantly reduce the lifespan of adult bees, jeopardizing entire colonies and threatening the essential role they play in our ecosystem.

Our Commitment to Chemical-Free Honey

At Norma May Honey, we are passionate about maintaining a chemical and antibiotic-free approach to our honey production. We are proud to be among the few in Australia utilizing the innovative Varroa Controller, ensuring our honey remains pure, just as nature intended.

What is the Varroa Controller?

The Varroa Controller is an advanced technology designed for the heat treatment of capped bee brood, achieving a remarkable 97% effectiveness in treating Varroa mites. Since about 80% of these mites reside in the brood, this targeted approach significantly reduces their numbers in a colony without harming the bees.

The device operates by hanging brushed capped brood frames inside, where they are heated to a temperature lethal to the mites while allowing the pupae to develop unharmed. It also optimizes humidification and ventilation throughout the process. Unlike other hyperthermia treatments that stress the entire colony, the Varroa Controller focuses solely on the affected brood, promoting the overall health of the hive.
